REOPENING WEDNESDAY JAN 16 2013

It's always a tough decision to Close the resort for the day...especially when the forecast is cool and sunny, however the decision allowed us to make good headway on rejuvenating our Bunny Blvd., Standard, Bambi, Ladies Downhill and Ben's Bump runs with freshly made snow. The temperatures did not fall into the "zone" until around midnight last night however once they did the snow making crew fired up the system and made some decent snow well into today. The groomer operators are currently out there pushing out the piles and repairing the impacts of this past weekends ridiculously high temperatures and rain down pours. Now that we have topped up the above mentioned terrain we can move onto the other areas in need while returning to normal operational hours.

It looks even better in person, but here are a few shots taken just moments before I sat down to write this blog....the groomers are still spreading the newly made snow in these pictures and will begin the "final" groom next.

As I always like to point out, you may not have snow on your front lawn, but we still have snow on ours here at the Brim!

We plan to have the following open for Day and Night skiing beginning WEDNESDAY JAN 15, 2013;

BUNNY BLVD.
STANDARD
BAMBI
LADIES DOWNHILL
BEN'S BUMP
and the
VAULT Terrain Park

serviced by the MAIN STREET and BOWL chairs and MAGIC CARPET conveyor lift.

PACE PENGUIN

If you are 8 years of age or younger (or you are a parent that has kids that age) stop by any ticket office or our Main Office in the East Chalet and pick up your PACE PENGUIN safety package for FREE!

Brimacombe is pleased to be taking part in a pilot safety initiative called PACE PENGUIN.

The objective of this program is to help reduce the risk of injury to young children in downhill sports by educating children, parents and fellow skiers/snowboarders.

This program is designed to not only address several of the known risk factors for children, but contribute to an overall positive experience for families. Early research indicates the PACE program has outstanding positive influence on parents’ resort selection. By helping children to have a safe and fun experience, we hope that today’s "little penguins" will grow into safe, dedicated life-long skiers and snowboarders, who will in turn, introduce their children to downhill sports.

A special THANK-YOU to the Brimacombe Volunteer Ski Patrol for their assistance in implementing this program.

OPERATIONAL UPDATE JAN 14, 2013

Due to the effect of the weekends weather on our snow conditions and the drop in temperature to snow making range not forecast until this evening (Jan 14, 2013), we have decided to remain
Closed for Tuesday Jan 15, 2013
-Day and Night skiing
to concentrate our snow making efforts on rejuvenating our eastern terrain.
***
Mother Nature can throw a mean curve ball. Until Friday Jan 11, 2013 we had been very pleased with her offerings from a few days before Christmas, cold temperatures and natural snow allowed us to rapidly open terrain for your enjoyment. To date we have already pumped 70% of the water to the snow making system that we were able to pump all of last season...things have gone well considering the late snow making start this fall.
This past weekend saw positive temperatures in the double digits and heavy down pours of rain (mostly overnight Saturday and some last night) which have taken their toll on our overall conditions. We HAVE NOT lost all of our snow however we made the decision to remain closed tomorrow for Day and Night skiing (Tuesday January 15, 2013) to allow us to concentrate our snow making efforts for a prolonged period of time on our eastern terrain (Standard, Bambi and Bunny Blvd.) in order to recover the areas lost and replenish our reserves for the long term. We plan to re-open Wednesday January 16, 2013 for Day and Night Skiing with the following terrain; Standard, Bambi, Bunny Blvd., Ladies Downhill, Ben's Bump and the Vault Terrain Park. From there we will work to re-open the Bowl, Clubhouse Run, Promenade, Piggy Bank and Pete's Elbow.

Daily Lift Tickets will be $20 until further notice!

WE WILL BE CLOSED SUNDAY JAN 13, 2013

IMPORTANT NOTE

DUE TO FORECAST HEAVY RAINS AND UNSEASONABLY MILD TEMPERATURES

BRIMACOMBE WILL BE CLOSED SUNDAY JANUARY 13, 2013

WE ARE SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE

ALL PROGRAMS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TOMORROW WILL BE SHIFTED ONE WEEK AHEAD
***
The January thaw...our arch nemesis, some years it is gentle on us and others....it creates a challenge. All in all the skiing and snowboarding is reportedly good on the slopes -fast and fun, it LOOKS worse in some areas than others because after any rain or melting all the dirt and particules suspended in snow melt down and discolour the surface. That being said we did loose a fair amount of snow in some areas and have had to close Pete's Elbow on top of the already closed Park Ave making the PIGGY BANK terrain park a hiking access only area again.
The decision to close tomorrow was made based on the current forecast of 10-15mm of rain over night and through tomorrow with 10*C temperatures...very challenging weather conditions to groom and properly prepare the slopes especially after the unseasonably mild and wet few days we've had. Overall, there is still a lot of snow out here and the forecast looks good for snowmaking beginning Monday night. It will not take long for us to have the terrain back in the condition it was up until now and then on to working to add more open runs!
Our BIGGEST challenge is always convincing the folks in the city that even though they may not see snow on their front lawns....we still have snow on ours!

SNOW AT THE BRIM!

By all reports it's been raining south of Taunton rd. today, but that was not the case here at the Brim! We woke up to an inch or two of fresh new snow and it snowed well into the afternoon.

If you were not out here getting some down time...
you're missing out!

The dedicated team of volunteers from CADS-DURHAM hit the slopes today for their pre-program on hill training session.

Today the group practiced loading the chair lifts (including our new Main Street chair with loading conveyor for the first time) and "driving" the equipment in preparation for next weeks start of their 8 week adaptive skiing program.

LOOKING AHEAD

The temperature is forecast to drop tonight and into tomorrow afternoon, our plan is to bring our snowmaking arsenal back onto the terrain we have already opened and build more base depth on the thinner areas.

The forecast for this week appears to show us entering the infamous "January thaw", a phenomenon we often see within the second two weeks of January. The "January thaw" is typically a week or so of higher than seasonal temperatures with the occasional day or two of rain, these events typically harm nothing more than the perception of how much snow we have on our terrain...when the snow melts in the towns and cities people often mistakenly think we have lost all of our snow too. The die hard skiers know that this is never the case and our conditions actually suffer very little. We may lose a few areas that are strictly natural snow but these will be quickly recovered as soon as the temperatures drop into the "snowmaking zone". By next week we should be through the mild spell and back into winter temperatures again.

VAULT TERRAIN PARK

Stephan and his crew have be working hard building the VAULT terrain park and we plan to have it open for night skiing on Tuesday, January 8, 2013. This years park promises to be great, don't forget to get your Brimacombe Park Pass! You can follow our easy to use on line Park Pass Program here www.brimacombe.ca/parkpass  or stop by the Main office in the East Chalet and ask of our in house version to complete if you do not have reliable Internet service.

What's happening at the Brim...

We have had a GREAT first two weeks of the season out here at the Brim! Consistent cold weather and ample water reserve has allowed us to rapidly open terrain for your skiing and snowboarding enjoyment! If you were not out on the slopes the BOWL opened Wednesday and BEN’S BUMP opened today!

WHAT ARE WE OPENING NEXT?

We will be opening CLUBHOUSE RUN and PROMENDADE tomorrow (Jan 5, 2013) serviced by the West Chair, West Chalet and Parking lot #1. Access from the east will be across the top section of Flyer through the chute to Promenade.

Construction of our VAULT terrain park will begin tomorrow with the plan being to open it Tuesday  January 8, 2013 at 4:30pm.

Snowmaking weather will be minimal this week, however we plan to come back onto already open terrain when possible to build up thin areas etc. We will be continuing to make snow on the FLYER when we can, as well as getting equipment onto Park Ave when possible (until now it has been open on 100% natural snow only).

PLEASE NOTE

Tomorrow will be the first day that we will run a race course on the west side of the Standard Run (new course location) and Ben’s Bump together. It will be a good test run to see how everything flows before the 8 week lesson programs fire up next week.  Access to the BOWL Chair from the Main Street quad will be via the TOP of LADIES DOWNHILL.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013!

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALL OF US AT BRIMACOMBE!

It's a bright and crisp day out here at the Brim, a beautiful start to a new year! Why not join us today to take in some fresh air and get some down time?

The temperatures hiccuped yesterday onto the plus side of zero degrees Celsius forcing us to shut down snowmaking during the day. While most of you were returning home from New Year's Eve parties our dedicated snowmaking staff was on the hill firing the system back up to continue our efforts to get more terrain open. We are pushing hard to have the BOWL open tomorrow (Wednesday Jan 2) and follow soon with Ben's Bump. This will of course depend on all of the factors from temperature to wind direction that we deal with but things are looking promising -check our snow line (905 983-7669) or website www.brimacombe.ca each morning for the most up to date information. Snow production is still running strong in the VAULT terrain park and we will build and open it as soon as possible.
Some snowmaking equipment has been moved west with the plan being to get the upper chute from Flyer into Promenade covered and then down into the bottom half of Clubhouse run. Snow is also being made on the top half of Clubhouse run so that we can get the West chair, West Chalet and some terrain over there open as soon as we can. Our sights are set on opening all of the terrain needed to run our Brimacombe Snow School lesson programs, Pee Wee Camp Camp and Brimacombe Racing Club activities....plus the Vault terrain park of course, while providing terrain options for our many members and guests. The weather and pond expansion have been key to our success in getting terrain open as fast as we have since the decent snowmaking weather arrived just a few days before Christmas.
