SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!

THE NEWS YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!

In the fall of 2011, we announced our commitment to purchase a new chairlift with a goal of installing it in the Standard area during the summer of 2012.

We asked you to support our efforts by supporting Brimacombe and everything we have to offer.

We reminded you that “every dollar spent here, stays here” and goes directly back into the facilities, and you – our members and guests - showed us that you support our commitment by supporting your club!

It’s no secret that the 2011/12 season was a tough one weather wise, but in our 75 years of history we have seen our share of challenges, while continuing to keep our focus on the future and striving to meet our expansion and facility improvement goals. With your continued support and our commitment to grow our club successfully into the future, we have decided to make this chairlift a reality and install it this summer!

We did this with your support!
The enthusiasm and support of our members and guests is what has made the Oshawa Ski Club, now Brimacombe, so amazing these past 75 years. On behalf of your Board of Directors and Management Team, thank you so much for the interest and support you have shown for this project, which is now set to break ground in the coming months.

Our new lift…
After working through a long process of analysis and discussion we have decided to contract Leitner-Poma Canada Inc. to build and install our new lift. This new fourth chairlift will be a fixed-grip, four-person chair with a special twist!

In order to increase uphill efficiency and reduce the challenges to new skiers and snowboarders we have opted to install an automatic Compac Loading Conveyor!

Loading conveyors are relatively new on the market and very few resorts in Ontario can lay claim to having a system like this to improve the experience of loading a fixed grip lift. Loading conveyors offer all of the ease of loading of a detachable chairlift making the experience ideal for everyone from beginner to expert, while reducing slowdowns and stops originating in the load area.

The lift will travel from the bottom east side of the Standard run and off-load between the Standard and Bowl chairlifts. This will allow easy access from all of our eastern terrain at the bottom, while servicing all terrain from the Standard run east at the top, with easy access to Ladies' Downhill, Ben’s Bump and Bowl!

This new lift will greatly improve overall flow and uphill capacity in this area getting you to where you want to be sooner, on the slopes!

Thank you!
Investments like this new chair keep Brimacombe an exciting and fun place to ski and snowboard, but, most importantly, they help to ensure we are sustainable for years to come by maintaining a modern infrastructure. We are dedicated to providing the quality of facilities you have become used to over the past 75 years, and with your continued support we will continue to build a strong future for your club.

Have a great summer!

If you were at the Brim today you would agree....today was an awesome day to be outdoors with skis or a snowboard strapped to your feet.
.
I could use lots of adjectives to describe the kind of day it was....but as is often the case, pictures will do a better job.

The Home Development racers ended their season with an action packed race on the Standard Run,

The conditions are SUPERB!

Preparing to descend Richards' Landing (the jump hill in its previous life),
Whistler and T-bar 8,

A quick lesson at the top of Rutherford's cut,

SNOW

Yes, SNOW....we got it, about 5"-6" to be exact. The sun has just broke the cloud cover after an entire day of heavy snowfall.
Here are a few pictures to illustrate what our day has been like at the Brim.

Brimacombe Ski Racing held their "Skills Day" today, a fun way to wrap up the season,

Clark S. happy to be on the slopes,

Once again, it looks like winter, heavy snow is loading the trees, and the lawns on the drive here are surely covered with white gold.

It’s an exciting time here at Brimacombe! Not only are we celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the Oshawa Ski Club, but the financial success of the past couple seasons has also allowed your Management Team and Board of Directors to move ahead with growth plans for your Club’s future success.

As a first step in this long-term plan, we have committed to the purchase and installation of a new fourth chairlift to be installed in the Standard run area. Our goal is to install the new chair as soon as this coming Summer 2012, but we need your help to ensure we meet this goal. The approximate cost of a new quad chair is $1.6 million. We have already saved about $1 million towards this project, and only need to earn the additional $600,000 this winter to make a new chair a reality this coming summer. We can do this with your support!

You’ve probably heard us say it before, but in case you haven’t I’ll say it again, “Every dollar spent here, stays here!” As a not-for-profit ski and snowboard area, every dollar you spend on-site at Brimacombe is invested back into the facility, contributing to projects such as our new chairlift. It makes supporting your facility easy, and in fact most of you have been doing it already!

Let’s work together to raise the remaining funds and secure a new chairlift by Summer 2012.

Here are four easy ways you can help:

1. Bring someone new to Brimacombe
Do you know someone who would love skiing or snowboarding at Brimacombe? Take the initiative and invite them to try our slopes. Not only could you gain a new ski buddy, but every rental, lift ticket and membership sold also contributes to the purchase of our new chairlift.

2. Shop at Brimacombe’s Slopeside Retail Store
The next time you’re shopping for equipment, apparel and accessories, visit Brimacombe’s Slopeside Retail Store with one location only, conveniently located at the base of Brimacombe. Not only will you discover excellent selection and competitive pricing, but every hard-earned dollar you spend will also support the installation of our new chairlift. No other shop can do that, because Brimacombe does not operate a store in the hamlet of Kirby, Oshawa or any other town!

3. Book a lesson
Is there someone you know who wants to learn to ski or snowboard, or could you yourself use a refresher? Not only will a lesson increase the likelihood that a new skier or snowboarder will stick with the sport, but every lesson booked at Brimacombe’s award winning Snow School will also contribute dollars towards our new chairlift!

4. Treat yourself to lunch
Take advantage of Brimacombe’s on-site food services at the East and West Chalets, as well as the Snack Hut at the top of Standard. Every food and beverage purchase helps raise funds for our new chairlift and meet our goal to have it installed by Summer 2012.

The enthusiasm and support of our members is what has made the Oshawa Ski Club, now Brimacombe, so amazing these past 75 years. On behalf of your Board of Directors and Management Team, thank you so much for your continued support this season as we continue to grow and work together to raise funds to meet our goal of installing a new chairlift by the coming Summer 2012.

SUPER day.

If you didn't know better, you would have thought today was a day late in March. The sun was shining hot and the temperature rose to 7*C, great for skiing, not for trying to get more terrain open. There appears to be a window of marginal snowmaking temperatures beginning tonight after midnight, and if luck is on our side we might be able to sneak through until Sunday night. We will be set up on Bunny Blvd., Bowl, Main Terrain Park, and if the temperatures drop soon enough we will have guns back on the Standard to help build some base depth in some of the thinner areas.

We may not have our 21 runs and two parks open as of yet, but what terrain is open is in great shape! Don't miss the opportunity to get outside and enjoy some fresh air at the Brim.

Here are a few shots from today;

Time Trials for the Brimacombe Racing Club took place on the Standard run.

Blue skies, bright sunshine and wide open spaces....the ingredients to a great day on the slopes.

Pretty cool stuff isn't it?

Our 7 week lesson programs began today, here Callahan and Tim take part in the parent and tot group!

Renee is all ears for her instructors guidance.

and for everyone else on the slopes...today was a fantastic day to get in some down time.

***
Due to the recent fluctuations in weather and the limited terrain available on the western side of the property, the start of Brimacombe's Pee Wee Ski Camp will be postponed one week. As a result, the program will also be extended a week to compensate for the late start.

Brimacombe's Pee Wee Ski Camp will now run
from January 21 & 22 to February 25 & 26, 2012.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you in advance for your understanding as we continue to work hard to make snow and open new runs and terrain!

***

Tomorrow is another great day to ski or snowboard, expect slightly lower temperatures and as a result slightly firmer and quicker snow. We have 5 runs and our Beginner Park open serviced by two chairs and our Magic Carpet conveyor lift. Not a member? Guest lift tickets are currently 50% off our regular prices, don't miss out on this great opportunity to ski for half price!

It's been another day is paradise,

Cheers,

Mark

SLOWLY BUT SURELY

It's been an interesting start to the season....very reminiscent of 2006-2007 however we are much further ahead with runs and lifts open than we were that year.

To put things in perspective on January 6, 2007 it was 9*C and raining lightly. We had one run open, serviced by the Standard chair. It took 7 more days (Jan 13, 2007) to get another run open, and the second lift to open -the Bowl chair- took until Jan 16, 2007. Winter did arrive that year, and the rest of the season was great....we just had to be patient.

For as long as the Oshawa Ski Club, now operating as Brimacombe, has been in existence (75 years!!!), we have seen our share of years that Mother Nature has has taken a lazy approach to getting started and illustrates the importance of our continual investments in snowmaking and grooming technology. Stating that, we are still very reliant on the weather...something we have no control over. Like 2006-2007 we have been faced with marginal, if not mild temperatures...very little quality snowmaking time.

Snowmaking is a science, not a simple act, and not something I can fully explain here in the at the Brim blog, but it is important to know that quality and quantity are directly related to a few factors...the main being temperature. Yes, we can make snow now at around -3*c thanks to a product called "Snomax" (it is not a chemical like it is often referred to, but a natural ice-nucleating protein) but not nearly as fast or as high quality as we can when the temperatures get down low. Much of our production time this year has been between -3*c and -7*c....and before Snomax we would not of even considered making snow until -5*c (and even then it would be wet).

Snomax also speeds up the curing time of snow, allowing for easier grooming and a better final product...even more important in seasons like this. And just to put to rest a myth I always hear.....`Man made` snow is NOT `Fake, or Artificial`snow....it`s every bit as `Real`as the stuff Mother Nature makes....in fact it might even be better! If you haven`t been out yet, you are missing out, everyone is raving about the quality of skiing on what we have to offer...seize the opportunity!

So....the big question, what's next? (and I must apologize...a "real" blog post is far over due.)

Standard and Bambi were obviously our first priority, offering both beginner and slightly more advanced terrain. Our focus then turned to making snow on Ladies Downhill to connect into the Bowl chair for another lift option, and then working outwards to get more beginner and novice terrain open in preparation for the rapidly advancing start of our lesson programs, and more advanced terrain for our seasoned members, guests and the racing club.

We have been steadily working away at our Main terrain park, after getting the Beginner park open, but due to the volume of snow needed in that area, priority has been given to other runs...this does not mean that we have not been making snow there every opportunity we have had...it just means that we have not, and cannot dedicate all of our resources to the terrain park. Once we have a good handle on the eastern terrain, we will divide resources and start to conquer trails on the western side of the property in preparation for the start of our Pee Wee Ski Camp (the start date has been pushed back a week to Jan 21, 2012) and to open even more run variety for those who favor the west.

Everyone has their favourite run, trail or area to ski and our task is to balance the needs of our members, programs and guests against the variables we have to work with. Each area is as important to our business as the next, and each receives the same dedication.

The good news I have today, is that I can now announce the opening of Pete's Elbow tomorrow morning (making the Beginner park accessible from above) and we can expect Ben's Bump to open in the very near future. For those who have been riding the chairs you have seen that we have been making snow on Bunny Blvd. and the Bowl...expect these runs to be next in line when the weather decides to co-operate again.

Here are a few cool shots taken today of Bruce B. working his magic in our 2011 Prinoth BR 350

Maybe it's just me, but I LOVE the look of brand new man made snow in a pile ready to be pushed!

A couple of announcements...

From this Sat. January 7 until further notice you can also enjoy 50% off our regular daily lift ticket rates.

Also on the schedule for this week, Brimacombe Snow School's 7-Week Lesson Programs will start as originally scheduled between Wednesday, January 4 and Sunday, January 8, 2012.

Unfortunately, due to the recent fluctuations in weather and the limited terrain available on the western side of the property, the start of Brimacombe's Pee Wee Ski Camp will be postponed one week.

Paradise awaits, don't miss out!

Cheers,

Mark
