Get Ready.....OPENING SOON!

The count down to opening day has finally begun. We thank everyone for your patience with us and for understanding that we have been at the mercy of Mother Nature. We are set to OPEN for the 2011-2012 season on December 24th 2011 at 9 am (closing at 3:30pm)

Until early this morning (Tuesday, December 20), the weather had permitted only 75 hours of snowmaking time, mostly under unfavourable circumstances and stalled by heavy rain in the middle of last week. Despite that, and gaining a small window of snowmaking time today (Check out our photos on Facebook) Facebook fan page we have crept across the line of adequate snow needed to open the Standard and Bambi Runs. Between now and our planned opening day (Saturday Dec 24, 2011), we will overcome unseasonably mild temperatures and another spell of rain.

Originally, our target date was either Wednesday or Saturday of this week, but the forecast has called for temperatures as high as +6˚C and a 90% chance of precipitation. Therefore, these damaging weather conditions, which could potentially extend to early Thursday, have forced us to target our open for Saturday, December 24. After all, no one likes to ski in the rain, and spreading out our snow piles prematurely would only risk all our hard work. A concentrated focus on a Saturday open will keep us from risking a shaky open on Wednesday, and allow us the upcoming Thursday and Friday to groom the hills for perfect ski conditions on Saturday.

Thankfully, we have our experiences from years like the 2006-2007 season to assess the best strategy for periods of unstable weather like this. That year, our decision to air on the side of caution, making us the last resort in Durham to open, allowed our training programs and Christmas camps to remain on track despite the opening day anxieties. Most important of all that year, when we opened, we stayed open, weathering an extended period of mild weather.

As a reminder, the following is our tentative operational schedule through until our regular hours begin;

Saturday, December 24th - 9 am to 3:30 pm
Sunday, December 25th - CLOSED FOR CHRISTMAS
Monday December 26th - 9 am to 4:30 pm (Boxing Day)

Tuesday, December 27th through Friday, December 30th - 9 am to 4:30 pm with Night Skiing on Wednesday December 28th - 4:30 pm to 10 pm

Saturday, December 31st - 9 am to 3:30 pm
Sunday, January 1st - 9 am to 4:30 pm

Monday, January 2nd - 9 am to 4:30 pm
Tuesday, January 3rd through Friday, January 6th - Day Skiing 9 am to 4:30 pm and Night Skiing 4:30 pm to 10 pm

REGULAR OPERATIONAL HOURS WILL BEGIN ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 7th, 2012

I would personally like to thank everyone who's been tuning in to the blog to keep up to date with Brimacombe's progress. There are no words that could adequately express how appreciative we are of your support, for it has given everyone here the passion, dedication and drive to make this the best of Brimacombe's 75 years.

See you VERY soon,

Cheers,

Mark

Brimacombe productions presents SNOW.

At 3am this fine December morning (17,2011) when the temperature finally dropped low enough our overnight crew hit the go button on our snowmaking system....after a week of downtime and rain we were back in the snowmaking "business".

I'll let my photos tell my story today,
Brimacombe Snow School Manager Jayne standing beside a pile of man made snow this morning.

Low Temperature + Compressed Air + Water = SNOW

or in this case...Low Temperature + Water + BIG FAN = SNOW!

There is nothing FAKE about it...we just make it ourselves.

A silent storm under clear blue skies. Give us cold weather, we'll give you snow.

We are testing some new pieces of snowmaking equipment this season, this particular machine is a Techno Alpin T40 fan gun. Future investments into Brimacombe will include improvements to our snowmaking system, pre-testing equipment helps us understand what equipment works best for our resort.

A view from the top.....we are currently making snow on the STANDARD, BAMBI, and BUNNY BLVD. runs and the MAIN and BEGINNER TERRAIN PARKS.

With little to no help from Mother Nature so far this season, we are taking charge and

Don't forget, the SLOPESIDE RETAIL STORE at the Base of Brimacombe is open 7 days a week. We have something for everyone and Christmas is just a few short days away. Buying at Brimacombe's SLOPESIDE RETAIL store is investing in YOUR club, all dollars spent here, stay here!

For the most up to date information please refer to our website http://www.brimacombe.ca/ . We are setting our sights on Wednesday December 21st 2011 as a possible opening day, this is a very tentative date and heavily relies on the weather and our abilities to make snow between now and then. If we meet our snow needs we will be open for day skiing from 9am to 4:30pm and for night skiing from 4:30pm to 10pm.

Hang in there, WINTER is coming!

Cheers,

Mark

Getting Ready for Opening Day

Wow, what a crazy month for weather!

With temperatures fluctuating up into the double digits and frequent rain showers, it has definitely been a challenge for any resort to provide a reliable answer to the question "When is opening day?"; however, with temperatures dropping again this weekend, Brimacombe is planning on cranking up the white noise (aka. starting back up the snowmaking guns).

We're setting our sights on opening on either Wednesday, December 21, 2012 or Saturday, December 24, 2012 (weather and snow conditions permitting, of course).

What runs will be open on opening day?
We're not sure quite yet, but we will be sure to keep you updated. Stay tuned to the Blog, Facebook, Twitter and the Brimacombe website for updates!

SNOW, So Far This Season:

  • Mother Nature sent us a good dusting of white stuff on December 8, 2012
  • We began making snow on Friday, December 9 at 10:00 p.m. and continued until Sunday, when temperatures began to rise
  • Unfortunately, warm temperatures and rain caused the natural stuff to melt over this past week, but thanks to the hard work and insight of the Brimacombe team, our man-made piles, while smaller, are still dotting the hills
See the snow for yourself by viewing our webcams
  • This weekend, Brimacombe will once again turn on the snow guns and crank up the white noise, as temperatures drop to a predicted high of -4 C on Saturday and a low of -7 C over the entire weekend.
Watch the snow pile up by viewing our Standard Run Web Cam on the Brimacombe website!

See you on the slopes soon!

New at the Brim in 2011/12

If we could travel back in time to the 1940’s when the Oshawa Ski Club first started sliding down the slopes of Brimacombe, we would barely recognize the terrain.

In the many years since then, thousands of trees have been hand-planted to form the unique and diverse network of runs and trails that we see today; earth has been sculpted to complement the natural fall lines and to create ideal ski and snowboard terrain; and a number of ski lifts have come and gone in various locations across the property.

When you arrive at Brimacombe this coming winter for your first day on the slopes, you will see that our landscape has evolved once again.

Our year-round staff have been, and still are, hard at work, completing a number of maintenance and property improvement projects, as well as planning the programs and events for next season.

One of this summer’s major projects has been the removal of T-Bars #1 and #2, a.k.a. “The Standard T-Bars”.

T-Bar #1 was installed in 1977 alongside T-Bar #2, which had previously been installed in 1965. These two lifts were the main means of uphill travel in this area until 1992, when
the Standard Quad Chair was installed to replace them. Now, close to 19 years later, it is time to retire these lifts.

The removal of these T-Bars have created some exciting changes in this area that will improve both traffic flow and skiable terrain!

By removing the tree line along the western edge of T-Bar #2, we have widened the Standard run an average of 60 feet!

Congestion at the top of the Standard Chair will be drastically reduced during high traffic times, thanks to the extra space created by the removal of the unload areas and drive terminals of the old T-Bars.

This extra space will also allow us to reduce the pitch of the Standard Chair unload ramp, creating a gentler, more beginner-friendly exit route from the chair.

There will also be no more “hiking” around the ends of the T-Bars on nights or weekends, greatly improving the flow of skiers and boarders moving east and west through this area.

At the bottom of the hill, the removal of these T-Bars creates a wide-open space for better cross-flow and limited bottlenecking of skier traffic in one of our more congested areas.

On race days, the race course will now be set further east, leaving a much wider area of the Standard for regular traffic and lessons. The start ramp will be located near the top of the Standard Chair allowing more waiting area for the race participants while reducing the congestion for other skiers and boarders.

The race course will now end where the first towers of T-Bar #1 and #2 previously stood. This moves race spectator traffic off the main run into a relatively protected area, eliminating congestion and improving safety for everyone involved.

This is an exciting change that we feel will improve the overall skier/boarder experience at Brimacombe, and we are all very excited to take our first runs down the new and improved Standard run!

As we enter the 75th season at Brimacombe/Oshawa Ski Club, we are proud to carry a rich history forward into the future.

Looking back on the accomplishments of those involved over the years is humbling. There is no one person responsible for our success to date; instead, there are too many to count.

The Management Team and myself are all very proud to have the opportunity to be a part of this club and want to thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you when the gates swing open for the 2011-2012 season. ❅

BRIMACOMBE MOURNS THE LOSS OF RICK McCOLL

It is with great sadness that we share with you the loss of a friend and dedicated CADS Durham volunteer, Rick McColl.

Rick's life was cut short on Thursday, when he was struck and fatally injured by a passenger train in Pickering while performing his duties as CN Rail Assistant Track Maintenance Foreman. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

A resident of Hampton, Ontario, Rick was 53 years of age and only months from retirement. He leaves behind his wife Pam and two sons, Ben and Harley.

His passions were his family, his cottage on Vader Lake, music, sailing with his best mates and downhill skiing. Rick inspired a love of skiing with his family, and shared his knowledge and enthusiasm as a dedicated volunteer with the Canadian Disabled Ski Association (CADS) Durham program at Brimacombe for more than 10 years.

Our condolences go out to his family and friends. Rick will truly be missed.

Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Disabled Ski Association www.disabledskiing.ca
