Are You Prepared for Opening Day?

How many times have you been ready to hit the slopes for the first run of the season and realized you have no idea where your gloves are?

Mother Nature may have delayed opening day by a week, but that gives you some extra time to make sure you have everything you need for a great season.

Here are some things you can do this week to make sure you’re ready to hit the slopes at Brimacombe:
  • Dig out your winter gear. Skis, boards, outerwear, long underwear, etc.
  • Got snazzy new jacket this year? Don’t throw away your old one. Any gently used outerwear can be donated to Brimacombe’s Winter Coat and Food Drive anytime during the month of December. [learn more]
  • Do your skis or board require some TLC? Schedule a tune-up at Brimacombe’s Slopeside Retail Store. Offering a wide range of products and services the store is open this weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. [learn more]
  • Attach your membership card to your jacket. Don’t have your membership yet? Visit the Main Office any day before we open from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. to purchase memberships, lessons, gift cards, or update photos.
  • Planning on showing off your skills in the Vault terrain park this season? Complete the Park Pass program online today. [register here]
  • Stay up-to-date with announcements and events at Brimacombe by signing up for the Brimacombe eblast. [click here]

See you on the slopes soon!

Brimacombe's Earliest Opening Day in over a Decade

UPDATE!
PLEASE NOTE, BRIMACOMBE WILL NOT BE OPENING AS PLANNED. DUE TO WEATHER AND SNOW CONDITIONS, OUR OPENING DAY HAS BEEN DELAYED ONE WEEK UNTIL SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14.

It's official!

Brimacombe will be open for the 2013/14 season on Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m!
(weather and snow conditions permitting, of course)

This will be our earliest opening day in 11 years, thanks to better than expected weather conditions, the hard work of the maintenance and snowmaking teams and our newly expanded snowmaking pond!

And, better yet, all lift tickets will be only $22+hst until further notice.

We are currently planning to have both Bambi and Standard trails open, as well as hike-access to the Piggy Bank Terrain Park, but we encourage you to stay tuned for more updates as we continue to blow snow.

We are currently making snow on both Standard and Bambi runs, as well as the Piggy Bank and the Vault Terrain Parksplus building up the top and the base to access and the Boulevard and Main Street lifts.

Our first five days of operation will be as follows:
(weather and snow conditions permitting)

Get your gear ready and we will see you on the slopes!

Don't forget you can get more updates on our Facebook and Twitter feeds!

Snowmaking in progress!

The title of this post says it all...SNOWMAKING HAS BEGUN!

After running a couple tests on our snowmaking system last week, we officially cranked the snow guns into high gear on Wednesday, November 27, as soon as the temperatures dropped low enough. Combined with an awesome natural snowfall Tuesday night, we are looking at possibly our best early snowmaking in years!

To good to be true? No way!

The last couple seasons may have been slow to start, but this season is looking better than ever! In fact, several ski areas are lucky enough to be opening this weekend and Brimacombe and the rest will not be far behind.

While the physical location of each resort plays an important role in how much natural snow we receive and how much snow we are are able to make, we are happy to report that last night's snowmaking was more productive than expected!

Translation? When we showed up this morning, there was waay more snow than we expected! All thanks to the cold temperatures overnight and our snowmakers' hard work!

The million dollar question...

"When will you open?" is by far the number one question we hear each day, followed by "What runs will you open first?" And while we don't have an answer to either question at this exact moment, we will have a much better idea by the end of the day today!

Stay tuned for an opening day announcement tonight at 7:00 p.m!

Until then, you can find a sampling of some of the great snowmaking shots we've taken over the past week.

Don't forget you can get more updates on our Facebook and Twitter feeds!

I've never met a rodent I would trust.

It's groundhog day, the day when a forecast for the remainder of the season is made by a rodent.

There are a number of so called winter predicting Groundhogs across the land sleeping in burrows and there are crowds of folks who eagerly gather around these burrows each February 2nd waiting for these animals to wake up, go outside to stretch, and either stare dumbfounded into the bright lights of the television cameras and crowds of people....or panic and scurry back into their holes, supposedly alarmed by the sight of their own shadow.

...and collectively, we seem to place trust in what this animal has "told" us with it's actions.

The actions and therefore "prediction" of these ground hogs often varies from location to location....but if I were forced to take the "word" of one of these rodents, I'm going to go with Punxsutawney Phil this year.

It’s an exciting time here at Brimacombe!

Not only are we celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the Oshawa Ski Club, but the financial success of the past couple seasons has also allowed your Management Team and Board of Directors to move ahead with growth plans for your Club’s future success.

As a first step in this long-term plan, we have committed to the purchase and installation of a new fourth chairlift to be installed in the Standard run area. Our goal is to install the new chair as soon as this coming Summer 2012, but we need your help to ensure we meet this goal. The approximate cost of a new quad chair is $1.6 million. We have already saved about $1 million towards this project, and only need to earn the additional $600,000 this winter to make a new chair a reality this coming summer. We can do this with your support!

You’ve probably heard us say it before, but in case you haven’t I’ll say it again, “Every dollar spent here, stays here!” As a not-for-profit ski and snowboard area, every dollar you spend on-site at Brimacombe is invested back into the facility, contributing to projects such as our new chairlift. It makes supporting your facility easy, and in fact most of you have been doing it already!

Let’s work together to raise the remaining funds and secure a new chairlift by Summer 2012.

Here are four easy ways you can help:

1. Bring someone new to Brimacombe
Do you know someone who would love skiing or snowboarding at Brimacombe? Take the initiative and invite them to try our slopes. Not only could you gain a new ski buddy, but every rental, lift ticket and membership sold also contributes to the purchase of our new chairlift.

2. Shop at Brimacombe’s Slopeside Retail Store
The next time you’re shopping for equipment, apparel and accessories, visit Brimacombe’s Slopeside Retail Store with one location only, conveniently located at the base of Brimacombe. Not only will you discover excellent selection and competitive pricing, but every hard-earned dollar you spend will also support the installation of our new chairlift. No other shop can do that, because Brimacombe does not operate a store in the hamlet of Kirby, Oshawa or any other town!

3. Book a lesson
Is there someone you know who wants to learn to ski or snowboard, or could you yourself use a refresher? Not only will a lesson increase the likelihood that a new skier or snowboarder will stick with the sport, but every lesson booked at Brimacombe’s award winning Snow School will also contribute dollars towards our new chairlift!

4. Treat yourself to lunch
Take advantage of Brimacombe’s on-site food services at the East and West Chalets, as well as the Snack Hut at the top of Standard. Every food and beverage purchase helps raise funds for our new chairlift and meet our goal to have it installed by Summer 2012.

The enthusiasm and support of our members is what has made the Oshawa Ski Club, now Brimacombe, so amazing these past 75 years. On behalf of your Board of Directors and Management Team, thank you so much for your continued support this season as we continue to grow and work together to raise funds to meet our goal of installing a new chairlift by the coming Summer 2012.

It's winter...winter is short...make the BEST out of it here at the Brim,

The RETURN of WINTER.

After a dreary day yesterday, we awoke to the return of WINTER. While areas that had been previously covered with only natural snow took a beating (Park Avenue and the T-bar tow paths) the rest of our open terrain groomed up nicely and by all accounts the ski conditions are great.

Here's a couple of pictures...(not a complete display of open runs, all open terrain is in good condition)

GROOMER MAGIC

I just returned from a tour around the hill to assess the toll the rain has taken on the slopes. We have lost a few minor areas, but overall there is still ample snow to carry us through the March Break. Our talented grooming crew is preparing to head out and dig into our stock piles to work their magic. The weather looks good for the week ahead, we plan to be open 9am to 4:30pm Monday to Sunday, and Wednesday night 4:30pm to 10pm.

Our schedule ahead as posted on the home page is tentative and dependant on the weather and snow conditions....and of course daily attendance by you, our skiers and snowboarders. Don't let the poor weather this weekend stop you from enjoying the final days in the 2009/2010 season at Brimacombe.

Cheers,
Mark

TELL A FRIEND...THE SNOW IS GREAT!

The "question of the day" while running errands in town today....

1. So, do you guys have any snow left?

One of our toughest challenges as a ski and snowboarding facility is to convince people that even though there is no snow in town...we still have great conditions here at Brimacombe. The forecast for this weekend will not help either, but rest assured we will still have plenty of quality snow for the March break and beyond, we always run out of skiers and snowboarders before we run out of snow.

Help us spread the word, tell your friends, neighbours, classmates, co-workers, and random people on the streets...or even change your Facebook profile to read...THE SNOW IS GREAT AT BRIMACOMBE....SPEND SOME TIME ON THE SLOPES!

Speaking of the forecast ahead, please be sure to check our website or snow line 905-983-7669 before heading out to the slopes to ensure we are open (We will be closed if it rains).

If the weather forces us to close over the weekend, our Saturday Night Fever Rail Jam Series Finale will also be cancelled. Scores from the previous two events will calculate the series winners and we will announce the top results on our website www.brimacombe.ca

Beginning March 13, 2010 our Operational Hours will be changing.
Weather permitting we will be open...
