More terrain open at Brimacombe

In yesterday's Blog I mentioned that Ben's Bump and the Bowl would be opening soon...at the time of writing we were still uncertain as to whether or not we could pull it off for today. Well, as those who were out today saw the snow making and grooming staff worked their magic and the runs opened mid morning after some final trail prep. This brings our trails open total to seven runs plus the Beginner Park.

Lift tickets will remain at $20 each until Boxing day when they will increase to our regular season prices.

Don't forget that tomorrow is Dec. 24th, as is tradition we will be closing at 3:30pm for Christmas eve. We will also close at 3:30pm on New Year's Eve.

Show your holiday spirit! All members, day visitors and employees are encouraged to deck their suits with Santa, Elf, and other holiday accessories on on Wed. Dec. 23 and Thurs. Dec. 24.
(Just make sure that all loose or dangling items are secured while riding the lifts)

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Management and Staff of Brimacombe, I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Prosporous New Year!

It was another day in Paradise at the Brim.
Cheers,
Mark

Christmas holidays at the BRIM!

We've been blessed with some beautiful days out here at the Brim over the last few days, if you haven't been here you're missing out! Don't the let mercury on your thermometer fool you, the temperatures have been quite comfortable thanks to the bright sun beating down on us from above.

Show your holiday spirit! All members, day visitors and employees are encouraged to deck their suits with Santa, Elf, and other holiday accessories on on Wed. Dec. 23 and Thurs. Dec. 24.

Snow making is still in full force. Our team of snow makers and groomer operators have been hard at work pushing to get more terrain open. At time of writing I cannot say exactly when the Bowl and Ben's Bump will open, but I can say it will be soon. The Main terrain park will go under construction over the next short while and open as soon as it is complete. Don't forget to get your Brimacombe Park Pass, you will need it to access this park.

As many of you know we draw our snow making water from our man-made water reservoir at the bottom of our hill. This reservoir gives us a large supply of water enabling us to operate at maximum capacity for an extended period of time. This reservoir does however have it's limitations forcing us to cut back or shut down our snow making system at a certain point to allow time to recharge. We will be shutting down snow making production shortly for a day or two to allow our water supply to replenish. The upside of this is the fact that we have efficiently converted the contents of our pond...into tons of beautiful white snow for you to enjoy on our slopes.

Cheers,
Mark

TOMORROW.....the season begins.

Each year the week before we open is an interesting time out here. This year was no different.
From the time of my last Blog entry until now, the hill has been alive with feverish activity. On wednesday, We were fairly certain that tomorrow (Saturday Dec 19, 2009) would be our opening day...on ONE run weather permitting. Snow making was fired up Tuesday night, and the temperatures dropped into very productive range holding strong all week. By mid day yesterday the snow had been pushed out on the Standard and Bambi runs solidifing Saturday as our opening day. Since then, snow production has continued to be strong enabling us to get Bunny Blvd, the Beginner terrain park and very likely Pete's Elbow open for tomorrow with more terrain in the near future.
Here are a few shots of the action this week...

From the natural snow we recieved a week or so back...

To this weeks "Man made" production...

We've come a long way, and will have some GREAT ski and snowboarding conditions tomorrow.

As I write the Beginner park is under construction. The Beginner park is a progression based freestyle terrain area designed to provide the younger, or novice freestyle skier/snowboarder an area to hone their skills and work "progressively" towards larger features and our Main terrain park. No "Brimacombe Park pass" is required in this area, but as in our Main Park, Helmets are Mandatory and No Inverted Aerial Maneuvers are permitted.
Hundreds of people have registered and gone through our Park Pass program already, don't forget a Park Pass will be required to access the Main Park this season...yes parents, even you. Park Pass programs are designed to improve Terrain Park safety by educating all users about park specific rules and etiquette. Brimacombe Park Passes do cost $10 for the year, but all proceeds are used to directly offset some of the costs of the park and away from those who do not use our Freestyle terrain areas.

It's a good time to refresh the kids (and ourselves) about safety on the slopes. We at Brimacombe work hard to provide the tools to you -our members and guests- so that you can educate yourself and your families about proper facility use and your responsibilities while enjoying our slopes. Please take a few minutes to read through the information on the website pertaining to slope safety. This info can be found under the pull down menu "On the Slopes".

http://www.brimacombe.ca/on_the_slopes/safety

Around our facility we have posted a number of very important signs. These signs contain safety information, directives and other information designed to educate.

At all lifts you will find a number of BLUE signs with white lettering and white signs with black letters/pictograms and red circle "cross outs". These signs are required by law in most provinces of Canada (CSA standard, consistant at all ski resorts), and passengers are required to abide by the messages they contain.

Example (found at the top of all chair lifts)

The Alpine Responsibility Code is also posted at numerous locations across our facility in high traffic areas. This is a national code, and as part of the "agreement" of using a resorts facilities, skiers and snowboarders must follow the 10 steps while enjoying the slopes. Please take a few minutes to refresh yourself of these 10 simple points.

The signs above are not the only "rule" type of sign found at resorts (all resorts, not just Brimacombe), and I only draw attention to these as examples and to spark conversation and dialogue amongst you and your families. Talking about the "rules" isn't fun or exciting by any means, but important none the less. It's even less fun to remind you that failing to abide the messages on these "rule type" signs creates a dangerous situation, and may result in loss of skiing/snowboarding privilages. Enough about the rules...let's talk about some tools...

The following signs are also a national thing...these are part of the "Winter Wise" program developed by the TSSA and our ski associations here in Canada. The intent of these signs is to provide a visual, descriptive means of communicating proper lift riding techniques. These signs are posted at each lift, and in other high traffic areas around the facility. If you see someone you think is unsure of how to ride a lift, please point this signage out to them, and suggest they ask our lift attendants for assistance.

Please don't forget, Wear your lift pass in a visible location on the upper part of your body but below your head. Lift passes (memberships, lift tickets, or other pre-paid types of lift passes) are required to use all of our terrain...not just the lifts.

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow, it's always nice to welcome back our members and friends. We hope you enjoy the season ahead and look forward to providing you the best skiing and snowboarding terrain and experience in southern Ontario!

See you on the slopes....TOMORROW!

Cheers,
Mark

Fingers crossed...toes too.

Since my last Blog the weather took a turn and has been less than desirable for snow making. Late Saturday afternoon (Dec 12, 09) the guns were shut down due to milder temperatures, and a fair amount of rain fell last night. However, beginning tonight, the future looks snow making friendly and we're aimed and ready.

So, when do we plan to open? Always a tough call in years like this, however our sights are set WEATHER DEPENDING on this coming Saturday,Dec 19,09. Please be sure to check our website www.brimacombe.ca or call the snow phone (905)983-7669 for further updates and information as the weekend nears. If open, our terrain will be very limited. Mother Nature holds the cards, let's hope she deals us a winning hand.

Though this fall has been mild, it has not been overly unusual. We have been blessed with two FANTASTIC early starting winters which seem to overshadow the reality of what is, or is not a "normal" winter. Rest assured that given the forecast colder temperatures we will be in fine form for the season ahead. Good times are on the horizon!

Mark

Snowmaking...CHECK!

A familiar hiss filled the air....

At approximately 1 p.m. this afternoon (Dec 10, 09) the valves were opened and the snow began to flow from our system. Though the temperature out here is still on the mild side, it is slowly dropping into a more productive range. Currently snow making guns are operating on the Standard, and Bunny Blvd. runs, and in our main terrain park.

With the snow piles beginning to grow out here, it's time to really start thinking about getting your gear prepped for opening day. Our on-site Pro shop has a full line of great products at great prices! If you just need a tune up, the service shop is also open for the season. Don't forget, all dollars spent here, stay here!

The BRIMACOMBE PARK PASS program went live to our website yesterday, if you plan to ski or ride in our main terrain park you will need to complete the program to receive your pass. More information is available on our Terrain Park page at www.brimacombe.ca/park_pass

A park pass is not required to access our "progression" park. Helmets are mandatory for anyone accessing our terrain parks, No Inverted Aerial Maneuvers permitted.

Park Pass programs are growing in popularity at resorts across Canada and the US. This season alone at least 6 other Ontario resorts are introducing similar programs to ours with the intent to promote safety and etiquette in our terrain parks. Together we can reduce the risks associated with freestyle terrain, Ride safe, Ride Smart.

For those of you who have followed my ramblings over the past few years, I'd like to thank-you and welcome you back, for those who have just discovered my Blog...welcome to the show. I try to update as often as possible, at least once a week and sometimes daily. The intent of this Blog is to keep you up to date on all the fun and excitement happening at the BRIM.

Cheers,
Mark
